It's Friday

August 9th, 2013 at 01:24 pm

It's a beautiful day outside and it's Friday!!! Yippee!

Yesterday I spent: $11 on Chinese take out for me (planned), $13 on pizza for SO (planned), $20 on fixing the Bug's check engine light, and $13 at the grocery store for bread, butter, carrots, and applesauce.

The Bug only costing $20 was a happy surprise for me. My neighbor works at VW and brought my car into work to get the check engine light checked out. He found out that my catalytic converter caused the light to go on, but that none of the tests said that it failed yet. Eventually, it will fail and I will need to spend $1100 on a new one. I plan on keeping the Bug for at least five more years (it's 10 years old now), so I will have to do this. It will still be cheaper than a new car!

I'm thinking that I won't need to be spending any money today or tomorrow, but will on Sunday. SO and I are going golfing with my Dad and Uncle. I am a horrible, horrible golfer, but I like hanging out with Dad. I only feel bad for the people behind us. We do let people play through us, but if you let everyone play through, you will never finish your 9!

When we were very poor college students and first married DH drove a 1973 VW Bug that had an electrical short in it and every time the car would drive up this curvy winding hill where we lived the horn would go off. DH would regularly get flipped off by people who thought that he was intentionally beeping at them for not going faster.

Glad you were able to fix the problem economically.

I'm trying to stretch out the life of my 2001 RAV4 as much as I can. Its latest trick is to refuse to unlock the driver's door with the remote. Since it sets off the alarm when I use the key, this is a problem! Does seem to work if I lean in from the passenger's side and aim the remote right at the lock. Repair would be costly, as I have a non-standard security system (thanks to a previous owner). So I just hope I can keep making it work!

Since you will likely need to replace the VW's catalytic converter sometime in the future, I suggest you start a special fund to cover as much of the cost as possible in advance of the expenditure. With interest rates so abysmal, you could start with a Mason jar adding all change at the end of each day. Add a $ 20. bill each pay. Add any 'Snowflakes' like savings from coupons or discount from purchases converting cost 'avoidance' to tangible savings for a new project. It sounds so trifling when I put it into words but it's shocking how fast the sum needed is accumulated.
